Diabolical Sound Platoon at Balcony
It’s not often that a band’s debut-album release party and Snowdown coincide, but when it does, you can pretty much bet that there will be a serious party where the two collide.
In this case, the place will be downtown Durango and the band is Diabolical Sound Platoon, which will be celebrating the release of its debut album, “Bring the Catastrophe,” on Friday night at the Balcony Backstage, 600 Main Ave., right after the Snowdown parade. And in keeping with the Snowdown 1980s theme this year, the band will be hosting an 1980s radio station party – complete with surprises, giveaways and more. And they’ll be joined by musical guest Pants Party.

Bob Newnam Jazz Quartet in Cortez
So there’s a very good chance that by Saturday night you will be all Snowdowned out. If you still have the energy and desire to see live music, head out to the Sunflower Theatre, 8 E. Main St., in Cortez, where the Bob Newnam Jazz Quartet will set up shop for the evening.
The quartet, led by Mancos trumpeter Newnam, serves up its jazz with sides of bluegrass, rock and more.
The show starts at 7 p.m., with doors opening 45 minutes before. Concessions and a cash bar will be available. Tickets are $20 and are available at https://sunflowertheatre.org.
The Booze Bombs crashing Aztec
While not technically a weekend event, you can consider Tuesday night’s Booze Bombs show either as an extension of this weekend or a head-start on next. No matter what justification you use for getting out Tuesday night, get out, because this is a show not to be missed.
Hailing from Germany, The Booze Bombs are bringing rockabilly from the Black Forest to Crash Music in Aztec. Made up of members from different bands, their love for 1950s rock ’n’ roll united them, and they have been touring the U.S., Europe and Australia for the better part of the last decade.
While they’ll pull out favorites from the biggies: Wanda Jackson, Patsy Cline, etc., they’ll also play their own songs – and with seven CDs under their belt, they’ll have a lot of material to pull from.
Doors for the show will open at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Crash Music, in the historic Aztec Theater at 104 N. Main Ave. in Aztec. Tickets are $15 and are available at crashmusicaztec.com or by calling (505) 427-6748.
