Time for J. Paul Brown to ride into sunset

It has been my privilege to reside in Southwest Colorado for almost 35 years.

During that time, we have seen many folks offer themselves for various levels of public office. While some have been able to build coalitions from which to effect positive change for our beautiful corner of the state as well as protect the quality of life we all enjoy, others have taken a different road that has led to minimal effectiveness. One of those is presently running for State Legislature. This letter is an attempt to share some of that history.

In the early 1980s, J. Paul Brown vigorously opposed what is now the Durango-La Plata County Airport. Subsequently in the 1990s, he also opposed a citizen initiative for county home rule. After serving one term as county commissioner, he was dismissed from office by county residents. In 2010, he was elected to the legislature. Again, after one term, he was voted out of office.

As a former transportation commissioner, I have appreciated his interest in transportation. However, I cannot recall one piece of significant legislation that he supported.

With over 85 percent of the population residing within 25 miles of I-25, continuing to refuse to build coalitions is an ineffective method of protecting Western Slope or rural interests in our state.

It is time for J. Paul to ride into the sunset.

Happy trails.
