West History

50 YEARS AGO: “Loretta Lynch was crowned as the 1966 homecoming queen at Pagosa Springs high school Saturday afternoon during halftime ceremonies of the Pagosa Springs football game versus Mancos. Miss Lynch was escorted by team captain Gary Belmear, who seemed much less excited about the happenings than the new queen. On the field, things did not go too well, as the Pirates were beaten 13-2 by Mancos.”

25 YEARS AGO: “Durango Jazzercise instructor Rose Clark and Registrar Marsha Masterson attended the 1991 Jazzerjam convention in Las Vegas Sept. 13-15. While at the convention, they participated in the nation’s largest Jazzercise class with over 4,000 other people. Jazzercise is the country’s largest aerobic fitness program.”
