What a difference a day makes for FLC

Skyhawks set a pair of school records in a 42-point rout

Poor rebounding and a poor shooting percentage doomed the Fort Lewis College men’s basketball team against Colorado Mesa on Friday in Grand Junction.

The Skyhawks fixed both issues resoundingly in a 120-78 victory over Western State on Saturday in Gunnison.

FLC (6-3, 3-2 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference) pulled down 57 rebounds, 18 on the offensive end, compared to 26 by the Mountaineers and outshot Western State (0-9, 0-6 RMAC) 53.4 percent to 41.5 percent.

The Skyhawks made a school record 21-of-34 3-pointers, led by Cade Kloster’s four makes from behind the arc.

“We were pretty focused (Saturday night),” FLC head coach Bob Hofman said. “It was a really disappointing evening (Friday) night, and I was pleased how we responded.”

Kloster finished with 16 points, while Nick Tomsick led FLC with 18.

Alex Herrera and Lucas Archuleta joined them in double figures with 13 and 11 points, respectively.

Thirteen of the 14 Skyhawks that played in the game scored.

“This late in the year, we wish we had our rotation set better,” Hofman said.

FLC opened the game on an 8-2 run and never trailed in scoring the fifth most points in team history and the most ever in RMAC play.

The record was a 144-point outburst against American Indian Bible on Jan. 29, 1996.

The Skyhawks now have won two out of their last three games heading into their winter break.

FLC next will host Chadron State on Jan. 3 at Whalen Gymnasium.

“The fact that now we have eight days off, it was really important,” Hofman said. “The fact that we lost a home game to Pueblo, we needed to get that back. We’re not out of it. We really have to improve, but we’re in the hunt.”
