Wolf Creek picks its tentative date

Hopeful for
The newly expanded Elma triple chairlift should see a busy season in 2015-16. Meteorologists are calling for a big season, and the ski area announced a tentative opening day for Nov. 6.

Wolf Creek Ski Area has announced its hopeful opening day for the 2015-16 season.

If snow conditions allow, Wolf Creek has set Nov. 6 as its tentative first day of the winter season.

Wolf Creek famously opened Oct. 8 back in 2011 after a storm dumped 3 feet of powder on the ski area between South Fork and Pagosa Springs.

El Niño conditions are predicted this winter, which would be a big turnaround from last year’s dry season, when local ski area Hesperus closed in February.

Many California resorts saw less than 100 inches total snowfall.

FOX 31 Denver meteorologist Chris Tomer predicted Thursday afternoon that Wolf Creek could be king of Colorado this winter. Tomer predicts Wolf Creek could see 140 percent of its normal snowfall. He also said Durango, Silverton and Telluride should see 100 to 120 percent of normal snowfall.
