Youth hunter education event coming to Hesperus

Young hunters who want to continue developing their hunting skills can attend a Youth Hunter Education Competition, May 14-15, sponsored by Colorado Parks and Wildlife. The event will take place at the Fort Lewis College property in Hesperus.

"This event is for both experts and novices," said Steve McClung, district wildlife manager in Durango. "It's a great way for kids to brush up on their skills and to show their expertise."

Participants 18 years old and younger can participate, but they must have their hunter education card. The two-day event will feature shooting, hunting and wildlife identification skills. Participants will shoot shotguns, .22 rifles, muzzleloaders, and archery. They will also participate in wildlife identification, be tested on a shoot-don't shoot simulated hunting course, and participate in an orienteering exercise.

Cost of the event is $20. Those who have their own firearms and archery gear should bring them. CPW will supply the equipment to those who don't have their own.

For more information and to apply for the event, contact the Durango wildlife office at 247-0855, or send an e-mail to leland.florse@state.co.us. Applications must be submitted by May 6.
