Durango library offers health lectures

The Durango Public Library will host a summer series of lectures focused on the health and well-being of children and families. The first lecture, “The Drug Free Kid Zone” will be held from 7 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, and will focus on the warning signs of drug use and prevention strategies, statistics and awareness of the most commonly used and abused drugs by teens, and how stress and various chemical imbalances may lead to teen drug use.

“Understanding and Treating Fibromyalgia” will be presented from 7 to 8 p.m. June 20. Julie Gwyther, nationally certified acupuncturist from Durango Community Acupuncture, will explain the Oriental medical perspective on fibromyalgia and provide information on how changes in diet and lifestyle can help alleviate symptoms.

“Changing Your Child’s Future: Breakthrough Thinking About Kids’ Health” will be presented from 7 to 8 p.m. June 27. This lecture will focus on key health principles for newborns to teens.

Pilates demonstrations offered this week

The Pilates Connection is now offering classes, “Healing Pilates for the Cancer Journey.” Demonstrations and free sessions will be offered from noon to 1 p.m. Tuesday and 9 to 10 a.m. Saturday.

Ongoing classes (donation based) for those whose lives have been touched by cancer offer a safe and supportive environment with gentle and nurturing therapeutic movements. Novices are welcome.

Yoga classes offered for summer solstice

Sunrise Yoga will present free yoga outdoors classes for the summer solstice June 20. The classes will be offered from 7 to 8 a.m. or 8:15 to 9:15 a.m. at Durango Community Recreation Center outdoor amphitheater, next to the Animas River. Props are provided.
