Durango boys lacrosse led by Marshall in win at Glenwood Springs

DHS senior leads boys lacrosse to win

Jack Marshall scored four goals, Kyle Robinette added three, and the Durango High School boys lacrosse team blasted Glenwood Springs 11-4 on Friday.

The DHS Demons opened the season 0-2 but have won five games in a row since, improving their record to 5-2 and 2-1 in Mountain League action with the win. The loss dropped Glenwood Springs to 3-2 and 1-2 in league.

“It’s a fantastic win,” DHS head coach John Robinette said. “It is night and day from the first games we had this year. The kids are starting to jell and learning their roles. Most importantly, they’re playing hard and with class.”

Trevor Gabbard had four assists as he facilitated the DHS offense Friday. Jake Beekman and Hunter Hall each had one goal and one assist and Collin Barkley and Eno Ulschafer also had one goal each.

“It was a breakout game for Hunter Hall,” coach Robinette said. “He won 10-of-13 faceoffs and had 12 groundballs to go with his goal and assist. He really stepped it up.”

DHS outshot Glenwood Springs 58-26 and had a 29-8 advantage in groundballs.

Hank Muir made five saves in goal while giving up one score. Bryce Gordon played goalie the second half and made two saves while allowing three goals.

DHS misfired on nine shots in the first quarter and led only 1-0 at the first break. But DHS found the net in the second quarter and scored on three of its five shots.

“We dominated all facets of the game,” coach Robinette said.

He also credited the play of defensemen such as Sam Aber, Conner and Dillon Coleman and Mitch Guffey.

DHS will face Vail Mountain (3-2, 2-2), a new team to the Mountain League, at 1 p.m. Saturday.

“It will be a tough game. The guys are up to the challenge of playing a new opponent on a new field,” coach Robinette said.
