It was a year of firsts for the new Fort Lewis College women’s track and field team.
In its first year as a varsity sport in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference, the Skyhawks’ women’s track and field team recorded its first points in conference indoor and outdoor events.
Now, FLC has its first all-conference track athlete, as sophomore Alexis Cox was selected to the All-RMAC Outdoor Track and Field second team in the triple jump event.
The 5-foot-3 sophomore from Columbine High School in Littleton saved her best triple jump for last, as she flew 36-feet, 11.5 inches to finish fourth at the RMAC Championship meet at Colorado Mesa University in Grand Junction.
The jump, officially 11.26 meters, was good for fourth overall at the meet and set the FLC school record. Her five points for a fourth-place finish were the most ever scored by an individual in any event at a conference meet in FLC’s short program history.
Cox competed in four events for FLC, adding the 4x400-meter relay, javelin throw and long jump.
Fort Lewis College head coach Mark Dutro will head into his first full offseason being able to recruit track athletes, as the program grows toward a second season.
