Brinton burns the brightest for Skyhawks’ women’s basketballl

Fort Lewis College junior forward Mary Brinton backed up her preseason honor with a postseason award Monday, when she was named to the All-Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference First Team.

Mary Brinton was Fort Lewis College’s lone player to be honored by the 14 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference coaches Monday.

It was fitting, as she was the only Skyhawk to earn a preseason mention, too.

Brinton, a junior forward from Pagosa Springs, was named to the All-RMAC First Team for her play during the 2014-15 season.

“It’s great for Mary. She came on strong down the stretch and played really well for us,” FLC head coach Jason Flores said. “We will lean heavily on her next year and will need her to have another great year as a senior.”

She averaged a team-high 14.3 points per game and pulled down an average of 6.5 rebounds per game for FLC. She added 25 blocked shots and 20 steals in 26 games played.

She ranked eighth in the RMAC in scoring and blocked shots and was 10th in rebounding. She reached double-digit scoring in 22-of-26 games and had five games of at least 20 points. She had three double-doubles and set new career highs with 23 points and 15 rebounds in single games.

She also was an Academic All-RMAC First Team selection.

It all came after summer foot surgery.

“It was too bad she had to have the surgery in the summer, and it took her awhile to come back from,” Flores said. “It was something nagging her, and once she healed up fully from it she was even more productive.”

Taylor Wagner earned his third consecutive coach of the year award in his third season at Colorado Mesa. The Mavericks are still undefeated at home under Wagner.

Abby Kirchoff, a senior guard at UC-Colorado Springs was named the RMAC Player of the Year after averaging 19.8 points per game.

CSU-Pueblo senior center Katie Nehf was named the conference’s defensive player of the year. She ranked in the top 10 in the conference in rebounding, blocked shots and steals.

Georgia Ohrdorf, a freshman center at Metro State, was named the RMAC Freshman of the Year. She ranked 17th in the conference in rebounding.
