Colorado Department of Transportation and contractor Interstate Improvement Inc. will improve the concrete driving surface of U.S. Highway 160 west of Durango.

This preventive maintenance project includes replacing damaged concrete, rehabilitating the surface of existing concrete and resealing joints/cracks and inlaid traffic markings. The project also upgrades wheelchair accessible curb ramps at three intersections with Highway 160: at the CDOT traffic building access road (near the Colorado State Patrol), at County Road 206 and at Rosemary Lane.

The project is scheduled, weather permitting, to be completed in late July. Concrete repairs will take place on the section of U.S. Highway 160 west of the U.S. Highway 550 intersection at DoubleTree Hotel.

Work on the 2-mile concrete section will be done during daytime hours. Drivers will encounter single-lane closures from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. Mondays to Fridays. Weekend work is possible, if necessary to expedite the project’s completion.

The work zone is signed for no left turns, which is enforceable and will include a double fine for traffic infractions in a work zone. Left turns through the work zone are not only unsafe for construction workers, they present a safety risk for the driver, as well as other drivers on U.S. Highway 160 who cannot adequately see and react to these unlawful merges into traffic. Drivers making these unlawful and unsafe left turns through the work zone risk driving across wet concrete or epoxy residue.
