Crawford scores four goals, lifting FLC over CSU Pueblo

Fort Lewis lacrosse improves to 2-1 in RMAC

A four-goal performance from junior Liv Crawford lifted the Fort Lewis College women’s lacrosse team to a gritty 12-11 win over CSU Pueblo on Friday afternoon in a Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference play. Fort Lewis improved to 2-5 overall and 2-1 in the league with the win.

Pueblo put up 34 shots for the game compared with 25 for Fort Lewis. Junior goalkeeper Averi Basso, however, kept FLC in the game from the jump and ended the contest with 13 saves.

Crawford’s four goals led all players, followed by a three-goal day from sophomore Haley Dostie. Sophomore Ellie Martinez followed with two goals on four shots, and redshirt sophomore Rebecca Kiyokawa, freshman Mikki Brown and freshman Phoebe Ramirez chipped in one goal apiece.

The Pack struck first with two goals in the opening minute. Dostie answered right back with two consecutive goals to knot the score at 2-2 after four minutes. The Skyhawks earned their first lead, 3-2, 90 seconds later when Crawford scored her first goal. Pueblo responded with three in a row to carry a 5-3 lead into the final eight minutes of the quarter. Kiyakawa picked up her first goal of the afternoon with 5:09 on the clock, and Crawford scored again to close the quarter in a 5-5 deadlock.

The Skyhawks got out to a hot start in the second quarter with goals from Brown, Crawford and Martinez to charge ahead 8-5. The teams traded goals from there, pushing the score to 9-6 at halftime. Pueblo held a slight edge in shots for the half, 18-17, while the teams were even with 11 turnovers apiece.

Dostie extended the lead to 10-6 less than a minute into the third quarter with her third goal. The Thunderwolves, however, scored the game's next three goals to pull within one heading into the final quarter of play.

Crawford’s fourth goal gave the Skyhawks a 12-9 advantage, but Pueblo responded with two goals down the stretch to narrow the lead to 12-11 with three minutes to go.

With a one-goal lead and time dwindling, Pueblo took a timeout to to regroup and attempt one final play. The Fort Lewis defense had something to say about that, pressuring the opposing offense and holding the Pack at midfield to secure the 12-11 road win.

Up next, Fort Lewis (2-5, 2-1 RMAC) will visit Adams State University (0-2, 0-2 RMAC) at 3 p.m. Tuesday in game rescheduled from Wednesday because of weather and transportation concerns.
