Drivers paid little heed to human, bears

Some days ago, I noticed a mother bear attempting to shepherd her cubs across U.S. Highway 550 near where I live. I thought that might be dangerous and decided to try to help by carefully stepping onto the road to draw attention to the bears and hopefully slow traffic. What an idea! Many vehicles did not slow when they saw a human on the road, they actually sped up. If I had been impaired in some way, I have little doubt I would have been a pedestrian fatality. What gives around here, anyway?
