LPEA scholarship deadline approaching
Monday is the deadline for high school seniors to apply for scholarships and awards available through La Plata Electric Association.
Applications can be downloaded at www.lpea.coop. All high school seniors in La Plata and Archuleta counties, including home-schooled students, who receive electricity from LPEA are eligible to apply.
LPEA offers the LPEA Scholarship (four-year) and LPEA/John Voelker Memorial Scholarship (two-year) and provides for additional affiliated scholarships and awards from by Tri-State Generation and Transmission and Basin Electric Power Cooperative.
LPEA aims to train and educate young people for positions at rural electric cooperatives, although this is not a requirement of the scholarships.

Animas High School announces events
Animas High School will offer these programs:
All ninth-, 10th- and 11th-graders will have student-led conferences Wednesday, which will be scheduled for a time between the end of the school day and 6 p.m. The conferences will take place on campus.
Susy Raleigh’s Spanish 2 students will present “Las Ramblas de Barcelona Exhibition” from 4:30 to 6 p.m. Wednesday in the Commons at AHS. Students will share their research about famous Hispanic people. Students will dress as them and tell their stories in the first person in Spanish. All are welcome.
There will be no school Monday. School staff members will have a professional development day.
AHS juniors will begin their three-week LINK internships Monday. They will not attend classes during this time because they will be immersed in the adult work world, exploring a variety of career fields in Durango and elsewhere.
The Parent Advisory Committee will meet from 8:30 to 10 a.m. Tuesday at Carver Brewing Co., 1022 Main Ave. All are welcome.
Ninth-graders in Sara Price’s classes will hold a “Model U.N. Exhibition” from 5 to 7:30 p.m. March 9 in Noble Hall at Fort Lewis College. Students will represent their assigned countries as they work to solve the issue of the “right of return” for Palestinians. Students will simulate both moderated and unmoderated caucusing as they work toward consensus building.
AHS enrollment for incoming ninth-, 10th- and 11th-grade students for the 2015-16 school year is open. AHS information sessions will be held from 6 to 7 p.m. Tuesday and March 12 at AHS. To schedule a Shadow Day or parent tour, call 247-2474. If the number of enrolled students exceeds available spaces in a class, a lottery will be held March 13.

Continuing education available at FLC
The Fort Lewis College Continuing Education Program will offer these courses:
“Nonprofit Management: Collaborations – How to Help Them be Successful for Your Organization” will be held from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. March 11. Paulette Church, director of Continuing Education’s Nonprofit Management Program, will teach this class. She will discuss the investments required for collaboration and how to use case studies to form simple partnerships or full mergers.
“Professional Development for Managers” will begin April 16, from 6 to 8:30 p.m. “Managing with Respect and Reason” is the first class of an 18-hour training, which will be held in five segments. Participants will learn a new way of thinking to help them deal with conflict, construct logical consequences and determining who owns the problems. This training will be presented by P4 Consulting.

Methodist Thrift Shop offers scholarships
The Methodist Thrift Shop board has established a scholarship fund to help local students advance their education.
Applicants are rated on their church involvement, leadership, community service, extra-curricular activities and personal attributes.
Students can pick up an application at the Methodist Thrift Shop, 986 East Second Ave., or at high school counselors’ offices.
The application deadline is March 15.
Mountain Middle School enrollment is open
Mountain Middle School’s enrollment period for incoming sixth-, seventh- and eighth-grades is open through 11:59 p.m. Feb. 28.
The lottery will be held March 4.

Volunteers needed for boys conference
Durango School District 9-R needs 30 to 40 volunteers for its “Keys to High School Success ... and Beyond!” conference for eighth-grade boys.
Students will explore topics around advocacy, healthy relationships and positive self-image. Boys will gain skills through interactive workshops.
The conference will take place from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. May 7.

Florida Mesa Elementary to host Coffee Talk
Florida Mesa Elementary School will host Coffee Talk from 7:20 to 7:40 a.m. every Wednesday in the school’s front lobby.
Participants are invited to have cup of coffee and a breakfast item while sharing ideas for working with children at home in reading and math.
Park Elementary to host book fair
Park Elementary School will host a book fair through Friday in the library.
Students who buy a book will get another book for free.
Sunnyside Elementary to host readathon
Sunnyside Elementary School will host “Cultures Around the World! It’s A Small World After All,” a reading incentive program and celebration March 20.
Kindergarten through second-grade students who complete the reading program by reading more than 1,400 minutes at home will attend a half-school day reading celebration.
Third- through fifth-graders who complete more than 2,800 minutes of reading at home will attend a library reading celebration April 3.
Driver’s education class to be offered in March
Four Corners Safety Association will offer the next 30-hour driver’s education class March 23-26.
The cost for the class and the six hours of driving required by the state is $385.
