Animas High School announces programs
Animas High School will offer these programs:
Ninth-graders in Sara Price’s classes will hold a Model UN Exhibition from 5 to 7:30 p.m. Monday at Fort Lewis College in Noble Hall, rooms 125 and 130. Students will represent their assigned countries as they work to solve the issue of the “Right of Return” for Palestinians. Students will simulate both moderated and unmoderated caucusing as they work toward consensus building.
Enrollment for incoming ninth-, 10th- and 11th-grade students for the 2015-16 school year is open. An information session will take place from 6 to 7 p.m. March 12 at AHS. To schedule a shadow day or parent tour, call 247-2474. If the number of enrolled students exceeds available spaces in a class, a lottery will be held March 13.

Volunteers needed for boys conference
Durango School District 9-R needs 30 to 40 volunteers for its “Keys to High School Success ... and Beyond!” conference for eighth-grade boys.
Students will explore topics around advocacy, healthy relationships and positive self-image. Boys will gain skills through interactive workshops.

Florida Mesa Elementary to host Coffee Talk
Florida Mesa Elementary School will host Coffee Talk from 7:20 to 7:40 a.m. every Wednesday in the school’s front lobby.
Participants are invited to have a cup of coffee and a breakfast item while sharing ideas for working with children at home in reading and math.
Sunnyside Elementary to host readathon
Sunnyside Elementary School will host “Cultures Around the World! It’s A Small World After All,” a reading incentive program and celebration March 20.
Kindergarten through second-grade students who complete the reading program by reading more than 1,400 minutes at home will attend a half-day reading celebration.
Third- through fifth-graders who complete more than 2,800 minutes of reading at home will attend a library reading celebration April 3.
Sunnyside to host St. Patrick’s celebration
Sunnyside Elementary School will host its annual St. Patrick’s Day Celebration from 5 to 8 p.m. March 14.
The event will feature a choice of corned beef or smoked brisket with all the sides. After dinner, there will be games and a cake and pie auction.
Tickets are available for purchase at the door for $10 for adults and $5 for students. Children 5 and younger are free.
All money raised will support the Sunnyside Independent Parent/Teacher Association in purchasing tablets to support student learning.

9-R to host preschool, kindergarten registration
Durango School District 9-R will host preschool and kindergarten registration at elementary schools from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. on these dates:
Animas Valley on April 7.
Riverview on April 8.
Sunnyside on April 10.
Fort Lewis Mesa on April 14.
Park on April 16.
Needham on April 20.
Florida Mesa on April 22.
To register, people should bring in a birth certificate, a copy of a child’s immunization record and proof of address.
A child must be 5 years old before Sept. 1 to be eligible to attend kindergarten. In addition, 9-R will offer preschool services.
9-R school board to host work session
The Durango School District 9-R Board of Education will hold a work session at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday in the district office building, 201 E. 12th St.
The work session is open to the public.
The regularly scheduled board meeting will take place March 31.
Escalante Middle School to attend History Day
Escalante Middle School will compete at Regional History Day on Friday at Fort Lewis College.
Scholarships available to students in 9-R
The Durango Education Foundation is offering 11 scholarships this year to seniors graduating from Durango School District 9-R.
The scholarships are interest-based and vary in award amount from $1,000 for one year to $10,000 per year for four years. The deadline to apply is 5 p.m. March 31.

Science center announces programs
The Powerhouse Science Center, 1333 Camino del Rio, will offer these programs:
Pub Science: The Science of Snow will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday. Presenters will include Backcountry Experience, Kling Mountain Guides, Sim Tables, Colorado Avalanche Information Center and the National Snow and Ice Data Center. Participants will gain a better understanding of molecular water science, technological innovations in winter gear, local mountain topography and avalanche pattern simulation. Pub Science is a free event for people 18 and older.
The fourth annual Steampunk Stomp, a winter fundraiser for science programs and exhibits, will be held from 6 to 11 p.m. March 14 at the Powerhouse. The event will feature a cash bar and food, costume contest and live Steampunk-styled entertainment provided by Carute Roma, Miss Goodie’s Cancan Revue, and the ASA Fire Tribe. Tickets are available at the Powerhouse, Southwest Sound and Maria’s Bookshop. The cost is $20 in advance and $25 at the door.

Animation class opens enrollment
Rocky Mountain Animation Labs announces enrollment is open for its animation class.
Award winning animator David Tart teaches students, ages 8 to 20, to bring their ideas to life through the art of animation.
Tart provides an engaging approach to learning animation, founded in his professional experience working on films, including “Toy Story,” “Monsters, Inc.,” “Finding Nemo” and “A Bug’s Life.”
People can register now for the 10-week after-school class, starting the week of March 16. Students will learn CG character animation as well as stop-motion, cut-out and pixellation animation.

Fort Lewis College Continuing Education will offer these programs:
“Nonprofit Management: Dynamic, Transformational Strategic Planning,” taught by Will Neder, principal and owner of Universal Operations LLC in Denver, will be held from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. March 18 on campus. Neder’s approach to strategic planning is done with a process that is transforming nonprofits and increasing their effectiveness across the region.
“Professional Development for Managers” will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. April 18 on campus. This course will empower people to face the different motivational challenges on their front line. Trainers will include P4 Consulting.

Conservation district offering scholarship
The La Plata Conservation District will offer a $1,000 scholarship to a student pursuing a degree relating to agriculture and/or natural resources.
The district encourages graduating high school students and continuing college students interested in pursuing a career in a qualifying discipline to visit www.LaPlataCD.org for more information and an application form. An application form also can be obtained at the district’s offices at 31 Suttle St.
Applications are due by 5 p.m. April 1 at the La Plata Conservation District’s office. The district does not accept electronic applications at this time.
