Interact Club dinner will raise money

The Durango High School Interact Club will host its annual International Cuisine Dinner from 6 to 9 p.m. Wednesday.

All proceeds will help fund its upcoming international service trip. Tickets are $20 for adults and $12 for kids.

Students can get their teeth cleaned

Durango High Schools’ School Based Health Center will offer a free dental clinic May 8.

The clinic is available to students who are in need of a dental cleaning, fluoride and sealants. Restorative work will be available at a follow-up visit at Smile Makers.

DHS summer school will begin June 8

Durango High School will offer Summer School from June 8 to July 3.

All courses will be computer-based using an online educational system called APEX. English, math, science and social studies core academic classes will be available. Fees must be paid before a student can enroll, and all courses must be completed by July 3.

Durango High School graduation will be held at 6 p.m. May 29 at the DHS Stadium.

Home-school program seeking applications

Durango School District 9-R’s Shared School Program is taking applications for the 2015-16 school year.

The program is designed for home-school families. Elementary classes will meet from 8:45 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays. Middle schoolers will meet from 8:15 a.m. to 3 p.m. Wednesdays. Classes will meet at Miller Middle School.

Parents invited to talk with DHS counselors

Durango High School parents are invited to “Coffee with the Counselors” from 8:15 to 9 a.m. May 6 at DHS.

The counselors will be available to answer questions or discuss concerns.

Riverview students to perform folk music

Riverview Elementary School third-grade students will perform folk music from the Caribbean at 6:30 p.m. Thursday in the school’s Eagle Theater.

Kindergarten sign-ups at Florida Mesa

Durango School District 9-R will hold a final preschool/kindergarten registration from 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Wednesday at Florida Mesa Elementary School.

When registering, bring proof of address, birth certificate and a copy of the child’s immunization. A child must be 5 years old before Sept. 1 to be eligible to attend kindergarten.

After-school group helps boys build skills

Boys Advocacy and Mentoring, an after-school group for third- to fifth-grade boys, will begin at Fort Lewis Mesa Elementary.

The group will participate in team building activities, games and more.

Benefit to help family with medical bills

The Florida Mesa Elementary School third-grade class will host a fundraiser for the English family from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday at the school.

The event will feature food, arm wrestling, a live pie auction, a silent auction and more. All proceeds will help the English family pay for medical expenses related to a car accident.

FLC students to present research

The Fort Lewis College Undergraduate Research Symposium will take place Thursday.

The symposium will begin at 8 a.m. FLC students will present their research findings from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Student Union Vallecito Room and from 1:30 to 6 p.m. in Roshong Recital Hall in Jones Hall. Poster presentations will follow from 6 to 7:30 p.m. in the Student Union Ballroom.

Science center announces programs

The Powerhouse Science Center, 1333 Camino del Rio, will offer these programs:

“Archaeology Pub Science: Dig a Little Deeper” will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. May 1 in the Powerhouse Gallery.

“STEM-Power: Growing the Future for Girls” will take place from 6 to 8 p.m. May 22. The program is open to girls, 5 to 12 years old, and will feature science, technology, engineering and mathematics activities and a chance to meet female professional scientists, engineers and mathematicians. Fort Lewis Mesa kids can bring bikes

The Fort Lewis Mesa Bike Rodeo will be held May 8.

Children are invited to bring their bikes to use during their PE classes.

Class to explore Harry Potter books

Rachel Turiel will teach a Harry Potter discussion and writing class in the Storytime room of Durango Public Library, 1900 East Third Ave.

Class participants will discuss plot themes of the seven books, play games, unearth obscure factoids and do in-class, Hogwarts-themed creative-writing assignments.

Classes will take place from 3:45 to 5 p.m. Wednesdays from June 10 to July 8 or Tuesdays from July 14 to Aug. 11.

Animas High School announces events

Animas High School announces these events:

The Prom will take place from 7 to 11 p.m. Saturday at the DoubleTree Hotel. The prom will be followed by the Osprey After Prom Party from 11:30 p.m. to 2 a.m. at Durango Community Recreation Center. Tickets are $40 ahead of time or $50 at the door, and are available to all AHS juniors and seniors.

Students from Steve Smith’s classes will exhibit their individual Honors Chemistry projects from 6 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Powerhouse Science Center.

The AHS Board of Directors will meet from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at AHS.

The AHS All-School Math Exhibition will be from 5 to 7 p.m. April 29 at AHS. All math classes will exhibit simultaneously.

Childhood council to train caregivers

The Early Childhood Council of La Plata County, in collaboration with Southwest Colorado Child Care Resource & Referral, will offer these trainings at the Early Childhood Council Training Center in Durango:

“Medication Administration” will be held from 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. May 2. The cost is $40.

“Universal Precautions” will be held from 2:30 to 4 p.m. May 2. The cost is $15.

“First Aid & CPR” will be held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. May 9. The cost is $100.

This summer, try out creative collage class

The Durango Arts Center offers four sessions of the collage class MeCards with Barbara Horn.

The class will be offered from 9 a.m. to noon Saturdays, June 6, June 20, July 11 and July 25. The cost is $50 for center members and $60 for nonmembers. The cost of this workshop is for two people. Children younger than 9 need to be accompanied by an adult. Other pairs can be any ages.

Head Start invites applications

The Southern Ute Montessori Head Start/Early Head Start program in Ignacio is accepting applications for the 2015-16 school year.

Head Start serves kids from 3 to 5 years old, and Early Head Start serves pre-natal women, as well as children from 6 weeks old to 3 years old. Families of children with special needs and low-income families are encouraged to apply. There is no charge to qualifying families, regardless of income.

Know Your Dough, a nonprofit that provides financial wellness programs for local youth and young adults, will host a program at Durango High School for 11th-graders through April 24.

The Fort Lewis College Continuing Education Program will offer these course:

9-R seeks scholarship winner information

The counseling office at Durango High School wants to know all the scholarships students have received.

This information should be delivered to the counseling office or emailed to csmith3@durango.k12.co.us: name, name of the scholarship or program, amount awarded, a copy of the letter offering the scholarship and the name of the school the student will be attending in the fall. Information must be received by May 8.
