Fort Lewis women’s soccer stuns No. 9 Dallas Baptist

Skyhawks women’s soccer ends their non-conference schedule with a big upset

The old guard showed they know how to score, too.

On a team filled with young talent, it was the upperclassmen leaders that led the Fort Lewis College women’s soccer team to a 2-1 win over No. 9 Dallas Baptist on Saturday in a neutral site game in Grand Junction.

FLC senior Brooke Milliet opened the scoring in the fifth minute after freshman Jenna Brown delivered a cross for the assist.

It was the first goal of the season for the Durango High School grad and daughter of Charlie and Janis Milliet.

Courtney Riley, a junior, then doubled the Skyhawks’ lead in the 49th minute after an assist by Carolyn Archer.

FLC (2-1-1) then had to hold on for 41 minutes, but Dallas Baptist (2-1-1) made the Skyhawks sweat.

Dallas Baptist freshman Skye Sivess pulled the Patriots within 1 in the 54th minute, but Dallas Baptist couldn’t find an equalizer.

It was the first goal of Sivess’ career.

The Patriots fired two shots and picked up a corner in the final 10 minutes of the match.

FLC senior goalkeeper Caitlyn Espinosa made two saves in the match.

Both teams let seven shots fly, but six were on goal for the Skyhawks compared to three for Dallas Baptist.

The Skyhawks bounced back from their first loss of the season Thursday, a 2-0 defeat to Angelo State, also in Grand Junction.

FLC now has wrapped up its non-conference schedule and will open Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference play at 7 p.m. Friday in Pueblo against CSU-Pueblo.

The Skyhawks won’t play at home until Sept. 25 against Colorado Mesa.
