Financial advisers to meet Thursday

Bob Ross, Life Underwriters Training Council fellow of Centennial, Colorado, will be the guest speaker at the National Association of Insurance and Financial Advisors Southwestern Colorado meeting at noon Thursday in the Oak Room of the Strater Hotel, 699 Main Ave.

The cost is $30 for nonmembers, which includes lunch and the three hours of continuing education for the ethics-state-approved class required by all licensed insurance agents every two years. Members have no charge for the luncheon or class. For people who join NAIFA-SW, their cost will be refunded at the next meeting, which will be in November.

Ross has been involved in advising and educating people in making informed insurance, investment and estate-planning decisions since 1982. He joined GuideOne Mutual Insurance Co. in 1994 and has been a company award winner in both personal and commercial (church) forms of insurance. Ross holds a degree in business with emphasis on finance.

10-hour meters added to Narrow Gauge Ave.

The city of Durango Parking Division has extended the available 10-hour meters on Narrow Gauge Avenue.

Ten-hour meters are now available from Seventh Street to 12th Street. By popular demand, each smart/Gem card swipe purchases an hour of time for 75 cents to minimize the swipes for all-day users.

A monthly pass to the city lots is $30, and daytime parking in the Wyndham lot in the 400-block of East Second Avenue is free.

Rotary Club to honor retiring fire chief

The Rotary Club of Durango will honor retiring Chief Dan Noonan with its Rotary Citizen’s Hero Award at 6 p.m. Tuesday at the Strater Hotel, 699 Main Ave.

After 10 years of volunteer firefighting, Noonan continued to serve the Durango area for 29 years as a career firefighter with the Hermosa Cliff and then Durango Fire Protection District after they merged. Since 2007, Noonan has been chief. He will retire at the end of this year.

In addition, club President Kari Plante, who is the regional oral-health specialist at San Juan Basin Health, will talk about the state of oral health in the San Juan Basin.

Trails 2000 group to host trailwork

Trails 2000 will host a Public Trailwork Day from 4 to 6:30 p.m. Wednesday on the Paradise Beach Trail, behind the Demon Bridge.

No experience is necessary. Trails 2000 will provide tools, gloves, safety/instructional tool talk, water and snacks. Work will start at the Demon Bridge and head up the trail, trimming the corridor and working on drainage features. Volunteers should wear long pants, long-sleeved shirt, closed-toe shoes, sun hat, sunscreen, and bring a water bottle and rain jacket.

Fall Astro Tour Sunday at Nature Center

Durango Nature Studies will host a Fall Astro Tour from 8:30 to 10:30 p.m. Sunday at the Durango Nature Center.

The cost is $10 for nonmembers, free for members.

Astronomer John Buting will lead the tour of the night sky.

Session on stress reduction to be held

Detailed information will be offered about research-based tools for coping more effectively with stress, anxiety, pain and illness from 6 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday at Inhabit, Suite 111, 1970 East Third Ave., on the first floor in the Riverside Professional Building.

Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction, the internationally acclaimed health-care program founded in 1979 by Jon Kabat-Zinn, Ph.D., at the University of Massachusetts Medical Center, has served people around the globe in coming to terms with the challenges and demands of daily life.

Janet Curry, MA, a licensed professional counselor in private practice and certified MBSR provider, will offer this free session on practical ways of reducing stress and increasing wellness, clarity and peace of mind.
