Rockfall work continues on Red Mountain Pass

The Colorado Department of Transportation and contractor Midwest Rockfall are making progress on rock scaling above U.S. Highway 550 on Red Mountain Pass.

The scaling has deposited rock debris behind the fence anchored on the roadway’s center line. Once loose rock has been scaled from the mountainside and crews have installed rockfall-monitoring equipment, CDOT can determine whether the fence can come down, allowing two-way traffic and the scope of the follow-up, long-term solution for mitigating rockfall.

The follow-up project could get underway in late summer. It likely will include the installation of additional mesh on the slope as well as rockfall fences and attenuators.

Highway 550 remains fully closed between Ironton Park and south of Ouray from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and 1:30 to 6:30 p.m. Monday to Saturday until sometime before the Memorial Day weekend. The pass will be open all other times, with single-lane, alternating traffic controlled by a signal.
