Kiwanis Club to meet Thursday

The Kiwanis Club of Durango will meet at noon Thursday at the Durango Community Recreation Center, 2700 Main Ave.

A presentation on the future of the newspaper will take place. The cost for lunch is $13. Guests are welcome.

Author to give presentation Friday

Author Erica Olsen will present “Writing the Four Corners” at 7 p.m. Friday at the Crow Canyon Archaeological Center, 23390 Road K in Cortez.

The event is presented as part of the Four Corners Lecture Series and is free. Four Corner resident Erica Olsen is the author of Recapture, a collection of short fiction about the once and future West. Olsen uses the subjects of place, landscape, and history to write fiction that reflects on the relationship between nature and culture. During her presentation, Olsen will read from Recapture and talk about the role of archaeology, artifacts, national parks, and public lands in her stories.

Birthing the Future to host fundraiser

Birthing The Future, an international nonprofit in Bayfield, will host a fundraiser art sale from 3 to 6 p.m. Sunday at a private home in Durango.

The artist, whose work will be for sale is John Wimberley of Ashland, Ore. His black and white, museum quality, selenium-toned landscapes and petroglyphs have been compared to Ansel Adams, who invited him to show in his gallery.

Suzanne Arms, founder and director of Birthing The Future, will host the event and show a clip from the recently completed film, “John Wimberley – American Master,” which may air on PBS next year. This event is free but RSVP is required, as only 25 people will be invited. In addition to the artists’ print sale will be an auction of several Wimberley prints and one drawing.

Food coop to host Harvest Festival

The fourth annual Harvest Festival at Durango Natural Foods Co-op will take place from noon to 4 p.m. Sunday at 575 East Eighth Ave.

The event will include booths, vendors, children’s activities, food, music, drawings and a chance to win a cruiser bicycle. The drawings will take place at 3 p.m.

Archaeological society to meet Thursday

The San Juan Basin Archaeological Society meeting will be held in conjunction with the Four Corners Lecture Series at 7 p.m. Thursday at the Center of Southwest Studies at Fort Lewis College.

Bureau of Reclamation archaeologist Lauren Jelinek will discuss “Walking the Line: Identity Politics in Southwestern Archaeology.” Politics play an important role in the funding, development and legitimization of anthropological and archaeological research.

This work has important social and political implications to the modern day descendants of the populations that once inhabited this region. The public is invited.

Ignacio library announces closure

Ignacio Community Library, 470 Goddard Ave., will be closed in observance of Cultural Diversity Day on Oct. 14.

The library will reopen on Oct. 15.

Parks & Recreation receives award

The city of Durango Parks & Recreation Department has received the Columbine Award for Programming for Durango Connect from the Colorado Parks and Recreation Association.

The awards are designed to highlight best practices and creative ideas in Colorado.

The Columbine Award was for the inaugural Durango Connect held Sept. 27, 2012, in which more than 9,000 people joined hands to celebrate the Animas River Trail. The second Durango Connect was held last week.
