For 137 years, Mercy Regional Medical Center has provided quality, comprehensive medical care to Durango and the surrounding communities. We have been recognized as one of the “100 Great Community Hospitals” in the country for four consecutive years by Becker’s Hospital Review and have earned a five-star rating for overall hospital quality from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services four consecutive times. Both are honors our community can celebrate.
Rural communities are facing challenges across the country in providing needed health care. Many facilities are facing the tough choices of diminished services or closure of their hospitals altogether.
It is a constant challenge to attract the needed providers to maintain long-term viability of the hospital. The competition for these providers is fierce.
Durango is fortunate that our residents have access to many specialized services, including award-winning spine and orthopedics, nephrology, rheumatology, neurology, pulmonology and many more.
We are committed to continued recruiting efforts to broaden the scope of care for our region and meet the needs of our community.
We currently have more than 1,100 associates, and over 350 affiliated physicians and advanced practice providers. We have recently hired 11 new physicians and advanced practice providers, improving access in the following areas: primary care, foot and ankle orthopedics, hematology/oncology, gastroenterology and radiation oncology.

Moving beyond Mercy, a not-for-profit hospital, and the clinics that serve our community, we are part of the not-for-profit Centura Health system.
Centura comprises 17 member hospitals, many of which are located on the Front Range. The benefits of Mercy’s partnership are many: access to service lines and specialties not available locally; Flight For Life Colorado services, which are not ordinarily an option for communities our size; and world-class practices and options only available in urban hospital settings.
Mercy’s connection to Centura Health is a benefit not common in today’s rural health care environment. Being a part of Colorado’s largest health care system is an asset to the communities Mercy serves, providing opportunities to invest in state-of-the-art technology, share best practices with our sister hospitals across the system and lower expenses.
Centura Health and Mercy share the same mission, vision and values and our partnership allows our communities seamless access to a broad network of facilities and specialists who provide the same quality, compassionate care our communities have come to expect.
We are very fortunate to have an active and successful foundation. The Mercy Health Foundation provides many services and needed equipment to the hospital. They have raised funds for the Breast Care Center, the eight-bed Mercy Hospice House facility and other programs enhancing the reach and mission of our local providers.
Money raised for these services comes primarily from local donations and contributions. The facilities and enhanced programs are possible through the hard work of the staff and the foundation’s board of directors. The true spirit and mission of our community and donors shines through with the great work of the Mercy Health Foundation.
Durango is blessed by the abundant high-quality institutions existing in our wonderful community. It takes many dedicated community members and stakeholders to carry through and implement the shared visions of our area.
