CSU offers safety training for food professionals

Food service workers who need training in food safety may take classes this month at the La Plata County Fairgrounds.

Colorado State University and the La Plata County Extension Agency are offering a two-day course in ServSafe food protection manager certification training. ServSafe is a comprehensive food safety training program developed by the National Restaurant Association. The high-level classes are intended for food service managers and cottage foods producers.

The training class will be held from 8:45 a.m.-4 p.m. Oct. 15. The follow-up class, including time for questions and the examination will be conducted from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. Oct. 16. Both will be held in the Pine Room of the Fairgrounds Extension Building, 2500 Main Ave.

The cost is $150 per person. Call Wendy Rice at 384-6461 to pre-register by Oct. 10.

You can learn how to be gluten-free

For all you wheat-averse foodies out there, Natural Grocers will hold a gluten-free fair Saturday featuring an educational lecture, free samples and lots of information about living without wheat, barley and rye, the three components of gluten.

The talk is called “Healthy Gluten-Free Living” and will be conducted from 11 a.m.-12 p.m. There will be free gift bags for those who drop by, as well as a raffle for several baskets of gluten-free goodies.

The fair will run from 12-3 p.m. and will offer free samples of gluten-free foods, supplements and body-care items for attendees to try. Natural Grocers is located at 1123 Camino del Rio.

Harvest dinner pairs fall beers with food

Carver Brewing Co. will throw a Fall Harvest Beer Dinner on Oct. 9 featuring six food courses paired with six different types of beer, including a gotta-try beet curry-spiced beer.

The extensive meal will feature local produce in such dishes as southwestern braised pork and green chile tomatillo sauce, a salad of bacon, apples and gruyere cheese and curried chicken with roasted vegetables.

Beers to look forward to include Big J’s apple cider beer, a Belgian Dubbel and to end the evening, a vintage Big Grizz Barleywine Ale to go with a chocolate toffee-dipped eclair.

October is looking like a whole lot of fun. The dinner is $50 and will begin at 6 p.m. at Carver’s, 1022 Main Ave.
