Skyhawks Scoreboard: Cross-country teams fare well in season opener

Volleyball goes .500 in Texas, football canceled

The Fort Lewis College cross-country men’s and women’s cross-country teams got off to a solid start on Saturday, as the women finished in second-place, while the men took fourth overall at the Joe Vigil Invitational on Saturday morning at Cattails Golf Course in Alamosa.

The women’s team took second out of five teams, and picked up 55 points. The hosts, Adams State, won the event with 15 points.

The Grizzlies had the first eight finishers, as Eilish Flanagan won the race in 18 minutes, 6.2 seconds, while Kaylee Bogina was second in 18:21.1 and Tiffany Christensen was third in 18:26.9.

The Skyhawks were led by sophomore Angel Curley, who took 13th overall with a time of 20:07.4. Krista Benze was second for the Skyhawks in 20:42.6, while Makiah Salzano was third for FLC in 21:03.3.

On the men’s side, Adams State also won the event with 17 points. FLC recorded 119 points and had three runners in the top 30. Redshirt freshman Derek Macfarlane took eighth in 25:39.3, while true freshman Ethan Bartlett fared well in his debut, after he crossed the finish line in 26:59.4. Junior Brandon Sheard rounded out FLC’s top three with a time of 27:59.8.

The Skyhawks will compete at the University of California-Riverside Invitational next Saturday.

Volleyball

The Fort Lewis College volleyball team went 2-2 in the opening weekend of the season at the Kathleen Brasfield ASU Invitational in San Angelo, Texas.

On Friday, the Skyhawks won both matches, as they defeated Southeastern Oklahoma State University in five sets (25-17, 21-25, 25-23, 21-25 and 15-7) and took down Northwestern Oklahoma State University in a narrow four-set win (25-23, 24-26, 26-24 and 26-24).

Against Southeastern Oklahoma State, Bailey Longacre led FLC with 12 kills, seven aces and 20.5 total points. Freshman libero Kamryn Lopez recorded a team-high 25 digs, while Ohihay Shirley had 24. Courtney Bayles had a strong debut fort Fort Lewis, as she recorded 31 assists against Southeastern, and recorded 33 digs against Northwestern Oklahoma State.

In the second match, Lopez recorded 20 digs while Chandler Karr had eight kills and 15 digs in the win.

On Saturday, Fort Lewis fell 3-1 to Angelo State in four sets (15-25, 25-23, 17-25 and 15-25), before ending the tournament with a loss to Texas A&M-Kingsville in three sets (17-25, 11-25, and 15-25).

Against the Belles, Karr paced the Skyhawks, as she had eight kills and 15 digs, while senior middle blocker Bailey Longacre got six kills in one set of action.

In the final match against the Javelinas, Shirley led the Skyhawks with four kills, while Lopez and Alexa Treguboff recorded seven and six digs, respectively.

The Skyhawks will wrap up the weekend in Texas when they take on Texas-Permian Basin (3-0) at 11 a.m. in Odessa, Texas.

Football

The Fort Lewis College football team’s season opener against New Mexico Highlands University was canceled due to inclement weather.

The Skyhawks got off to an early 7-0 lead after Jeff Hansen scored from four yards out. The touchdown was set up by an interception by Darrian Stickney. The teams were pulled off due to lightning in the area, and after a lengthy delay, briefly got the game underway again before being pulled off for another lightning delay. The Skyhawks had a 7-0 lead with 6:19 left in the second quarter.

The announcement by the New Mexico Highlands athletic department came down at 7:39 p.m.

FLC will prepare for the home opener against Dixie State University at noon on Saturday.
