U.S. gold medal count lags behind Kenya, Jamaica

BEIJING – Even with its sixth consecutive title in the men’s 4x400-meter relay, the United States still finished behind Jamaica and Kenya with only six gold medals at this year’s world championships.

Jamaica again proved it is much more than just Usain Bolt when the country’s women’s team defeated the Americans on Sunday in the 4x400 relay and denied Allyson Felix a 10th world title.

Like the botched handoff in the men’s 4x100 relay on Saturday, the American women also lost valuable time with a hesitant handover in their duel with Jamaica.

In the men’s relay, Jamaica led coming into the finishing straight, but LaShawn Merritt timed his lap to perfection to earn gold, while Jamaica slipped out of the medals.

Dumoulin double dips Stage 9 for Vuelta lead

EL POBLE NOU DE BENITATXELL, Spain – Tom Dumoulin passed Tour de France winner Chris Froome with about 50 yards left in a steep climb to win the ninth stage and take the overall lead of the Spanish Vuelta on Sunday.

Froome jumped ahead with less than 200 yards left but couldn’t hold off the Dutchman’s late charge for his first stage victory in this year’s Vuelta.

Former overall leader Esteban Chaves of Colombia struggled at the end of the climb and finished nearly a minute behind, losing the leader’s red jersey. He is now 20 seconds behind Dumoulin.

Dumoulin and Chaves were involved in an early pileup nearly an hour into the 104.5-mile ride from Torrevieja to the Cumbre del Sol, or “Summit of the Sun” peak.

Fan dies after upper deck fall at Atlanta Braves game

ATLANTA – Authorities in Georgia released the identity of the fan who plunged to his death from an upper deck at Turner Field during a game between the Atlanta Braves and New York Yankees.

Gregory K. Murrey, 60, of Alpharetta, Georgia died after falling during the seventh inning of Saturday’s game into a lower-level stand, according to Mary Beth Hauptle, an investigator with the Fulton County Medical Examiner.

The fall immediately followed the introduction of Yankees slugger Alex Rodriguez as a pinch hitter. The game wasn’t delayed while medical personnel treated the man for about 10 minutes, applying CPR before putting him on a backboard. Murrey was pronounced dead at Grady Memorial Hospital a short time later.
