Rain at Dover washes out qualifying; Kenseth on pole

DOVER, Del. – Matt Kenseth won the pole for the NASCAR Sprint Cup race at Dover after rain wiped out qualifying Friday.

With the field set on points, Kenseth will start first and will be followed by Joe Gibbs Racing teammates Denny Hamlin and Carl Edwards. Hamlin and Kenseth have advanced into the second round of the Chase for the Sprint Cup championship with wins in the first two races.

The 16-driver field is sliced to 12 following Sunday’s race at Dover International Speedway. Reigning series champion Kevin Harvick is 15th in the standings and will likely have to win to advance and remain in championship contention.

Kyle Busch, Paul Menard, Harvick and Clint Bowyer are in the bottom four and most at risk of elimination on Sunday.

Spieth’s season voted the best among his peers

PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla. – Jordan Spieth was voted PGA Tour player of the year, giving him a sweep of all the significant awards.

The PGA Tour does not disclose how many votes Spieth received from the players, though the 22-year-old Texan removed any suspense last week with his four-shot victory in the Tour Championship to win the Fed Ex Cup.

Spieth had five wins this year, including the Masters and U.S. Open. He is the youngest player since Tiger Woods (21) to win the Jack Nicklaus Award as player of the year. Spieth also won the Arnold Palmer Award by topping the money list with a record $12 million, and the Vardon Trophy for the lowest adjusted scoring average.

Also Friday, Daniel Berger was voted rookie of the year. He was the only rookie to qualify for the Tour Championship.

Britain seeks franchise in London within 5 years

LONDON – Britain’s treasury chief hopes the NFL will put a permanent franchise in London within five years.

Chancellor George Osborne pushed his case for establishing an NFL team in London during a meeting Friday with owners, executives and former star players.

He said: “I am supporting the NFL to bring one of their 32 teams to London permanently and will work with them to make this happen.”

Osborne adds that “hopefully it is something we could achieve in the next few years, maybe four or five years’ time.”

Osborne spoke on the same day that the Miami Dolphins and New York Jets arrived in London ahead of their game at Wembley Stadium on Sunday.

U.S. Ski Team targets Vermont for World Cup stop in ’16

PARK CITY, Utah – The U.S. Ski and Snowboard Association will submit a proposal for Killington, Vermont, to host a women’s World Cup giant slalom and slalom race next season.

The plan will be presented this week at the International Ski Federation meetings in Zurich. The dates are Nov. 26-27, 2016.

Traditionally, Aspen has held the World Cup event over Thanksgiving weekend. But since the resort is hosting World Cup Finals in March 2017, there’s an opening on the calendar. If selected, Killington would become the first resort in the eastern United States to host a World Cup event since Waterville Valley, New Hampshire, in 1991.
