Tree art, tree poems

Local artist cooperative Studio & at 1027 Main Ave. will be featuring work from its newest member, Maureen May, in “Arbor: The Pose and Poetry of Trees.” The tree-themed show includes readings by local poets including Kevin Johnson, Haz Said, Michael Rendon, Dan Groth, Greg Moore, Peggy Cloy, Kelsey Dignum Wochele, Shay Lopez, Bryce Masse and Michael Thunder at the opening reception from 5 to 9 p.m. Friday. ‘Cosmic’ paintings

Durangoan Meredith Rose will show paintings of “humans in nature,” figures set in surreal landscapes, in a show called “Cosmic” from 5 to 9 p.m. Friday at The 10th Street Gallery, 163 10th St. Rose recently completed a 10-month painting trip on the coast of Oaxaca, Mexico, and will show five works from her trip, along with 10 that she painted locally. ‘From Broadway to folk music’

The Durango Choral Society will close its 2014-15 season, “Seasons of Song,” on Saturday at Durango Arts Center, 802 East Second Ave., with “Cabaret!”

“We have everything this year, from Broadway to folk music, from pathos to comedy,” said the society’s artistic director Linda Mack Berven. “Our special guests include The Jewel Tones from Telluride and, for the first time, an appearance by the Durango Youth Chorus.”

The doors open at 5:30 p.m., and the show begins at 6:15 p.m. Tickets are $50 and include hors d’oeuvres. For more information, visit www.durangochoralsociety.com.

50 years of Grateful Dead

Red Eyed Djinn, a jam band from Durango, will celebrate the Grateful Dead’s 50th anniversary with a 10 p.m. show Saturday at Balcony Backstage. They’ll also be celebrating the 25th anniversary of Animas Trading Co. and its co-owner’s 60th birthday, Doug Wakeman, said Art Cahill, bass player for Red Eyed. The band, which currently is recording an album, will play new material in a performance Cahill describes as “high-energy.” No cover.
