Enrollment for incoming ninth-, 10th- and 11th-grade students for the 2015-16 school year is open. An information session will take place from 6 to 7 p.m. Thursday at AHS. For more information, call 247-2474 to schedule a shadow day or parent tour. If the number of enrolled students exceeds available spaces in a class, a lottery will be on Friday. Marcus Renner’s 12th-grade humanities students will pitch business proposals designed to support strong, resilient local economies at the True Wealth Exhibition, from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Durango Community Recreation Center, 2700 Main Ave. The exhibition will happen in conjunction with a member meeting for Local First. People who attend will have the opportunity to vote on what projects they feel are the strongest. The three strongest proposals will win prizes from local independent businesses.
The AHS Board of Directors will meet from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at Animas High School.
9-R school board to meet March 31
The Durango School District 9-R Board of Education will meet at 5:30 p.m. March 31 in the district office building, 201 E. 12th St.
Creative thinking competition Saturday
Destination ImagiNation, a creative thinking competition for kids from kindergarten to 12th grade, will take place Saturday at Fort Lewis College.
Students choose from seven challenges that range from technical/engineering to scientific to fine arts to service learning. They create a solution without any adult interference and present their solution.
Winners will go to the state tournament in Denver and state winners will go to the global finals to compete against teams from 48 states and 30 countries.
Volunteers are needed to help at Saturday’s regional tournament.

Miss Indian World applicants sought
The 32nd annual Gathering of Nations, the world’s largest gathering of Native American and indigenous people, has begun accepting applications for the 2015 Miss Indian World competition.
Native American women representing their different tribes and traditions will compete for the title of Miss Indian World in the areas of tribal knowledge, dancing ability, public speaking, essay writing and personality assessment.
The 2015 Miss Indian World will serve for one year as a cultural goodwill ambassador for all native and indigenous people on behalf of the Gathering of Nations.
The pageant is open to any single woman who is between the ages of 18 and 25, has never been married, has no children and has knowledge of tribal traditions.

Sunnyside to host financial program
Know Your Dough, a nonprofit that provides financial wellness programs for local youths and young adults, will present a program at Sunnyside Elementary School for fourth-graders from March 10 to March 13.
The program is linked to the Colorado Academic Standards for personal finances. Students will be tested in April.
Alpine Bank and First Southwest Bank are co-sponsoring the development of this program, which will be available for all fourth-grade classes in the region.

Community college to host open house
An open house for career and technical education programs will be held from 1 to 3 p.m. Wednesday at Southwest Colorado Community College, 33057 U.S. Highway 160, east of Cortez.
A second open house will take place from 4 to 6 p.m. March 18. Refreshments will be served.
Career and technical programs offered at the Mancos campus include medical assistant, nurse aide, cosmetology, emergency medical services, paramedic, fire science, automotive service technology, welding and law enforcement.
Tours will be offered and people will be able to get information about different careers and speak to instructors.

DHS After Prom seeking volunteers
The Durango Community After Prom Association needs parents and community members willing to help with After Prom on April 18 and April 19.
Volunteer opportunities include: set-up; student check-in and check-out; casino; bingo; karaoke; prizes; town crier; inflatables; scavenger hunt/games; security; tattoos/face painting; emergency medical technician assistance; coat check; food set-up; and clean-up.

Home-school program to visit courtroom
Pine River Community Learning Center, in conjunction with Judge Martha Minot, will sponsor a mock trial for home-school families based on the story “The Three Little Pigs” at 1:30 p.m. March 18 in Minot’s courtroom at the La Plata County Courthouse, 1060 East Second Ave.
All home-school families are welcome to learn about the jury system. Attendees will have an opportunity to participate in a question-and-answer session with the judge and attorneys after the trial. The activity will last until about 3 p.m.
BHS theatre to present play
Bayfield High School Theatre will present Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein’s musical “Once Upon a Mattress,” based on Hans Christian Andersen’s “The Princess and the Pea,” on these dates: Friday, Saturday, March 19 and March 20.
The play will take place at 7 p.m. at the Bayfield Performing Arts Center at Bayfield High School. Tickets are $7 for students and seniors, $10 for adults. Tickets will be sold at the door or in advance.

District 9-R to hold kindergarten sign-ups
Durango School District 9-R will hold preschool/kindergarten registration at all elementary schools:
Animas Valley on April 7.
Riverview on April 8.
Sunnyside on April 10.
Fort Lewis Mesa on April 14.
Park on April 16.
Needham on April 20.
Florida Mesa on April 22.
Registration will be held from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. at each school.
When registering, people should bring in proof of address, birth certificate and a copy of the child’s immunization record.
Children must be 5 years old before Sept. 1 to be eligible to attend kindergarten.
Volunteers needed for boys conference
Durango School District 9-R needs 30 to 40 volunteers for its second annual “Keys to High School Success ... and Beyond!” conference for eighth-grade boys who are about to transition to high school.
The boys will explore topics around healthy relationships, positive self-image and advocacy. The conference will be held from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. May 7.

Florida Mesa offers Coffee Talk
Florida Mesa Elementary School will host Coffee Talk from 7:20 to 7:40 a.m. every Wednesday in the school’s lobby area.
Parents will learn about ideas for working with a child at home with reading and math. During March, the talks will focus on math.
Sunnyside to host St. Patrick’s Day party
Sunnyside Elementary School will host its annual St. Patrick’s Day Celebration on Saturday.
A choice of corned beef or smoked brisket with all the sides will be offered. Afterward, there will be games and a cake and pie auction.
Tickets will be available at the door for $10 for adults and $5 for students. Children 5 and younger are free. Money raised will support the Sunnyside Independent Parent/Teacher Association in purchasing tablet computers.

The Florida Mesa School Accountability Committee will meet from 8 to 9:30 a.m. Thursday at the school.
Rotary clubs offer program scholarships
The three Rotary clubs of Durango are offering a limited number of scholarships to attend the Rotary Youth Leadership Activity to be held over four days during the weekend of June 13 in Glenwood Springs.
Interested students should contact their counselor or Ken Beegles at headwaters@animas.net to apply. The deadline for submission is April 5, provided there are openings at that time.
Mid-level Spanish class available
The Durango Education Center will offer a mid-level conversational Spanish class from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Wednesdays from April 1 to May 6.
People who have taken at least one semester of Spanish and can speak beyond a beginner level are invited to attend.
This class will give people the opportunity to practice speaking and further their understanding of Spanish.
Students will practice speaking, listening, reading and writing in class and also learn about culture and customs.
This class is not suited for people who have never taken a Spanish language class.
The cost of the class is $110. Advance registration is required.

Animation school to host open house
Rocky Mountain Animation Labs will host an open house from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday at the Smiley Building, 1309 East Third Ave., Suite 3B.
Participants will learn about the new animation school founded by award-winning animator, David Tart.
The school teaches students, ages 8 to 20, to bring their ideas to life through the art of animation.
Tart provides an engaging approach to learning animation, founded in his professional experience and 15 years of teaching experience.
Students will learn CG character animation as well as stop-motion, cut-out, cel and pixellation animation.
