ALBUQUERQUE – The University of New Mexico is postponing its spring commencement because of the coronavirus pandemic.
President Garnett Stokes will seek student input as he considers when to reschedule the commencement that had been scheduled for May 16 and how it will be conducted, the university said Tuesday.
Stokes said the decision to postpone commencement is regrettable and that he knows commencement is a memorable part of graduates’ university experience.
“Our hearts hurt for our Lobos. This doesn’t mean we won’t celebrate, it means that we won’t get to as planned on May 16th,” the university said on Twitter.
The university is holding classes remotely, and Stokes said the faculty is working on how grading will be conducted for the current term.
For most people, the new coronavirus causes mild or moderate symptoms, such as fever and cough that clear up in two to three weeks. For some, especially older adults and people with existing health problems, it can cause more severe illness, including pneumonia and death. The vast majority of people recover.
