New project to ease traffic flow at Navajo State Park

A construction project to improve traffic flow inside Navajo State Park started recently and will continue through the summer.

Construction crews will be working primarily Monday through Thursday to avoid busy weekends at the park, said Doug Secrist, park manager. During the construction times, however, park users could experience short delays getting to campsites and onto the boat ramp.

"We'll be doing everything we can to avoid delays, but we do ask for park users to be patient," Secrist said.

When completed, the new intersection will greatly improve the traffic flow to and from the boat ramp and to the main camping areas. The project also includes construction of a permanent boat inspection station to check for zebra mussels.

"When the project is finished, campers and boaters will find access to be much easier and safer," Secrist said.

Colorado Parks and Wildlife has recently funded several major improvements totaling more than $2.5 million at Navajo State Park, including repair of the sewer system; improvements to the water system; repairs to the boat ramp, marina and dock; and expansion of the dry-storage area for boats. More parks improvements are also planned.

"More than 300,000 people visit the park during a typical year, and Colorado Parks and Wildlife is always working to make sure our facilities are accessible, safe and convenient," Secrist said. "These are great improvements for our visitors."

The 5,100-acre park offers boating, fishing, trails, wildlife viewing, 138 camp sites, and three cabins.

Entry to the park costs $7 per vehicle; an annual pass costs $70. The park's phone number is (970) 883-2208; the web site is http://cpw.state.co.us/placestogo/Parks/Navajo.
