Virtually all sentient beings know that there has been a run on toilet paper even though there is no pervasive evidence that the novel coronavirus is accompanied by diarrhea. Those same beings also know that there has been a run on firearms with the novel coronavirus supplanting former President Barack Obama as the premier firearms purveyor in these United States. Not so well noted is an apparent lack of follow-on firearms safety training. Excuses for this lack are slim as there are, at last count, approximately 30 firearms trainers on the La Plata County Sheriff’s list of same.
Even the most practiced user of firearms, or golf player, is very aware that such skills are perishable, extremely so. Once the trigger is pressed sufficiently to discharge the firearm, there is no second chance to verify the accuracy of the shot.
An improperly directed projectile is the absolute responsibility of the shooter. Bullet or golf ball differ only in the possibility of a catastrophic outcome.
Having the wherewithal to purchase a firearm is just the beginning of the trajectory. Where it ends will depend on commitment to skills and training, and perseverance and dedication to the safe and responsible use of a firearm in self-defense.
Firearms and their use is a cherished American trait. Defense of self or family, or simply another human being, is our right. Responsibility in its exercise is our duty.
