Try dessert – on the grill

Four brave teams attempted dessert on the grill at Women’s Resource Center fundraiser last weekend, and they’re all good ideas for your next cook-out.

The folks at the radio station 99X filled tiny sugar cones with chocolate and marshmallow crème and grilled them briefly to get that gooey texture of a s’more. They were a little sweet for the adults, but the kids scarfed them down.

J. Bo’s Ribs and Pizza and T’s Smokehouse offered a sophisticated finish with their grilled bread, brushed with olive oil and topped with chopped strawberries, blueberries and pineapple marinated in balsamic vinegar. Summery and not too sweet, it would go well with any adult beverage of choice.

In the dessert-as-popper category, Rent A Man combined ripe pineapple with smoky bacon and grilled the whole affair on two toothpicks, meant to be consumed in a single bite. Not exactly dessert, but a novel notion.

And then the simplest and most delicious of the lot, if you ask me – a grilled Granny Smith apple slice dipped in a killer caramel sauce – provided by none other than Honeyville, which creates and the sells the sauce. Truly, you could try this at home.
