San Juan Symphony Youth Orchestra to perform in Bayfield

The Dec. 2 and 3 Youth Orchestra concerts will spotlight the Spring 2018 San Juan Symphony Youth Orchestra piano concerto winner, eighth- grader Anna Newman, who will perform the first movement of Haydn's Piano Concerto in F Major.

The youth orchestra, under the direction of Lech Usinowicz, will also perform the first movement of Sir Edward Elgar's Serenade for Strings and will conclude with the fiery String Symphony No. 3 by Mendelssohn, which was composed when he was just 12 years old.

This piece has all of the great influences of the classical era while staying true to the times of the ever expressive romantic period.

The Junior Orchestra, under the direction of Mark Walser, and the Philharmonic under the director of Molly Jensen, will also perform.

The Youth Orchestra concerts are scheduled for 2 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 2, at the Bayfield Performing Arts Center and 7 p.m. Monday, Dec. 3, at the Community Concert Hall in Durango.

Tickets for the Durango concert may be purchased by calling the ticket office at 247-7657 or online at www.durangoconcerts.com.

The Youth Orchestra program is supported by Alpine Bank, the Ballantine Family Fund, Durango Friends of the Arts and Pine River Arts.
