Letters: Jack Turner is perfect for commission

I have had the great pleasure of knowing Jack Turner for over 50 years. We met at Miller Junior High in the late ’60s and I have noted his thoughtfulness and his love of Durango and pride in his family’s contribution to this city and county.

Driving home from Phoenix after a Broncos game, we had a great discussion on what the future would bring to this country and Durango. He was optimistic about both and believes he can make positive and fair changes that would benefit La Plata County. I was amazed by his passion for my old home town.

Local politics has never been so important with negativity, incompetence and racism the driving force of this administration in Washington. Speaking to Jack recently, he told me of some interviews he has taped with Durango natives that opened up my eyes. I know some of these people he speaks with and I had no idea that racism was alive and well growing up in Durango. As a white kid, I didn’t notice this, so I never spoke out against it, but now, 50 years later, I find it is still an ongoing problem.

Jack is determined to represent all citizens of this county. Jack is not like a lot of candidates for office in this era because when I asked him about his opponent, he had only good things to say about her.

Good luck, Jack.
