The La Plata County Fair is a highlight of the year for area 4-H and FFA families, plus gardeners, quilters, knitters, bakers, photographers, and lots more.

The fair's main events start on Wednesday when most entries are due. Most judging is on Thursday and Friday.

Activities and exhibits continue to next Sunday afternoon. The carnival will be open Wednesday through Sunday. The beer garden will be open Thursday through Sunday.

Popular spectator events are the corn shucking contest Thursday evening; community talent contest and the tractor pull Friday evening; the demolition derby and 4-H BBQ cookoff Saturday mid-day, the junior livestock sale and family dance Saturday evening; and 4-H/ FFA catch-it contests on Sunday.

The Silver Steaks Award for 4-H/ FFA market beef animals promotes use of calves from local ranches. The carcass contest (market beef, sheep, swine, goats) promotes optimum meat production, not which animals are prettiest in the show ring. The complete schedule and information about fair contests are in the fair book available at area businesses.
