Weiss at the head of her class

Skyhawks striker named RMAC Preseason Player of the Year
Sam Weiss enters the 2013 season with heady expectations. Last year’s All-South Central Region First Team performer was picked as the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference’s Preseason Player of the Year on Tuesday.

Fort Lewis College junior forward Sam Weiss will have some big expectations for the 2013 women’s soccer season.

The Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference coaches selected her as the league’s Preseason Player of the Year after her 17-goal, eight-assist season in 2012.

Weiss was a Daktronics All-America honorable mention in 2012 – voted on by schools’ sports information directors – and a member of the National Soccer Coaches Association of America All-South Central Region First Team.

Senior defender Madyson Wellcome joined Weiss on the Preseason All-RMAC roster.

The Skyhawks were picked to finish fourth in the conference with 29 points and received one of nine first-place votes.

Regis received four first-place votes and was picked to win the conference.

Colorado School of Mines and Metro State were voted second place and third place, respectively, and garnered three first-place votes each.

UC-Colorado Springs finished fifth in the poll and was followed by Colorado Mesa, New Mexico Highlands, CSU-Pueblo, Adams State, Western State College and Colorado Christian in sixth through 11th place, respectively.

The Regis Rangers senior defender Alison Cahill was selected as the RMAC Preseason Defensive Player of the Year.

FLC, which played Air Force in an exhibition Monday in Taos, N.M., and will play Adams State in a scrimmage Sunday and its alumnae game Aug. 31 at Dirks Field, will open its regular season against Texas A&M University-Commerce on Sept. 6 and Midwestern State on Sept. 8 in Grand Junction.
