Young hunters who want to continue developing their hunting skills can attend a Youth Hunter Education Competition, May 14-15, sponsored by Colorado Parks and Wildlife. The event will take place at the Fort Lewis College property in Hesperus.
Participants ages 18-and-younger can participate, but they must have their hunter education card. The event will feature shooting, hunting and wildlife identification skills.
Cost is $20. Those who have their own firearms and archery gear should bring them; otherwise, the equipment will be provided.

Duranglers Flies and Supplies, one of Durango’s local fly-fishing shop for over 30 years, was recently recognized by the Colorado Council of Trout Unlimited as the Exemplary Guide and Outfitter in Colorado for 2016. This award recognizes the significant contributions that Duranglers’ owners, John Flick and Tom Knopick, have made over many years in the mission of conservation of the cold-water fisheries in Southwest Colorado.
Flick and Knopick were instrumental in starting the Five Rivers Chapter of Trout Unlimited in June, 1984. Since then, they have contributed hundreds of hours advocating for area fisheries and donated thousands of dollars of time and merchandise to these conservation activities.
Men ages 18-40 who are interested in learning how to fish and hunt are invited to a weekend “Cast and Blast” sponsored by Colorado Parks and Wildlife, June 24-26.
Participants will learn some of the basics of wildlife biology, fly fishing, shotgun shooting and archery.
The weekend event will be held at the Lone Cone-Jim Olterman State Wildlife Area in San Miguel County.
Firearms and fishing gear will be provided. Attendees will be selected from applications submitted to the Montrose Service Center of Colorado Parks and Wildlife at 2300 South Townsend Ave., Montrose, Colorado, 81401. Applications can be obtained by calling 252-6000 or by email at darlene.trainor@state.co.us. A $40 refundable deposit is required.
Mountain Bike Specialists will host a free maintenance clinic from 6 to 7 p.m. May 18 at 949 Main Avenue.
Topics to be covered will be: care and cleaning of your bike, lubing the chain, how to fix a flat and how to tell when your bike needs professional assistance for a smoother and more comfortable ride. The clinic is co-op.
