Durango and Littleton high schools both entered their CHSAA Class 4A Boys Soccer State Championships’ second-round playoff game with similar statistics but different styles.
No. 8 Littleton scored 59 goals and allowed only eight this season.
No. 9 Durango scored 60 goals and allowed only 15 this season.
No. 8 Littleton entered the game 13-3 on a four-game winning streak.
No. 9 Durango entered the game 13-2-1 on an eight-game winning streak.
Those numbers changed Tuesday night on the turf at Littleton Public Schools Stadium, if only slightly.
According to a tweet on the Colorado High School Activities Association website, Littleton beat Durango 1-0 to match the Demons with 60 goals scored, and the Lions’ 14th win puts them in the state quarterfinals.
Littleton led 1-0 at the half, and Lions’ goalkeeper Theo Jensen was credited by Evergreen Sports (@EvergreenSport) for making a couple of nice saves to keep the Demons out of the net.
Hamad Ali Abid, the Lions’ leading scorer, scored the game’s only goal – his 15th this season – in the 11th minute.
Durango’s season is finished at 13-3-1.
“They’ve got four big guys in the back, and they are in a diamond formation,” DHS senior Tony Williams said earlier this week. “All week we’ve been working on getting forwards inside the diamond with intricate combo play.”
Williams and fellow seniors Nate Curmano, Logan Graham, Jacob Kaplon, Dylan McClain, Chris Petty, Roberto Razo, Evan Schertz and Lars Schwaebe all played their final games for the Demons.
