The best thing about freshmen ...

Bayfield’s young guns score again in their soccer finale

Harldy anyone kept the Bayfield High School boys soccer side out of the net this season.

The Wolverines ended their 2014 campaign with a 5-2 loss at Pagosa Springs on Friday, but BHS (1-13, 1-11 Region 5) scored in 12 of its 14 games.

BHS was playing without three of its normal starters because of a band competition, but senior Bailey Ludwig put the Wolverines on the board with the game’s first goal in the first 5 minutes of the game.

“He blasted a shot from 35 yards out that went upper 90,” BHS head coach Dave Foster said. “It was awesome.”

The Wolverines allowed three goals after that, but Grant Pierce pulled BHS within striking distance before halftime. He was fouled just outside the 18-yard box and was awarded a free kick.

Foster noticed the Pirates’ wall wasn’t formed and told Pierce to hit the ball quickly.

“The goalie didn’t have a chance to make a play,” Foster said.

Pierce finished the season as Bayfield’s leading scorer with seven goals.

BHS trailed 3-2 at halftime.

James Berndt led Pagosa Springs (10-4, 8-4 Region 5) with two goals, while two other Pirates also scored.

An own goal in the second half hurt Bayfield’s chances for a comeback, and Pagosa Springs scored once more to ice the game.

“My freshmen walked away saying it was the best game they’ve played all season long,” Foster said. “We’re really looking forward to next season and the next couple years, because we have a lot of young players that were fortunate to gain some valuable experience.”
