As the season grew a week older, the competition got tougher for Durango’s Young America Football League teams.

In four games played last weekend, the Demons picked up one win, as the third-grade squad rolled to a 42-0 win against Bayfield to improve to 6-0 this season.

Malique Rodriguez ran wild for 80 yards and two touchdowns, and he also hauled in a 45-yard touchdown pass from Jerad Lopez, who totaled 57 yards of offense and two touchdowns. Isaiah McCrady added 60 yards and a touchdown. The defensive effort stymied Bayfield while the offense continued to pour on points.

The Durango third-grade team will get a well-earned bye this weekend.

The fourth-grade unit played strong but gave up two late touchdowns in a 25-19 loss to the Bloomfield Bobcats, who improved to 5-1 while the Demons dropped to 3-3. Behind a no-huddle offense, the Demons marched down the field early and scored on a 1-yard quarterback sneak from Grady Feeney, who then hit Tyler Hoerl for the extra-point conversion. Feeney later hit Hoerl on a 4-yard TD pass, and Blaze Aguilar added a 54-yard kick return. Bloomfield’s passing game eventually got to the Demons in the loss, but not before Tyler Dugan racked up seven tackles, including one sack. The team will play at 9 a.m. Saturday at Kirtland.

Durango answered immediately with a 60-yard kick return for a touchdown from Max Schtakleff. Brady Hoerl would add a 1-yard TD run, but an untimely fumble by Durango would keep the Demons out of the end zone for a potential game-tying score. Steven Gallegos led the team with nine tackles. Zane Pontine had six tackles and a fumble recovery. Up next is a road game against Montezuma at 11 a.m. Saturday in Kirtland.

In the sixth-grade game, the Demons loss 18-14 to the Farmington Titans. Linkin Griego threw a for 65 yards. Cole Pontine added 36 rushing yards and a TD.
