Fort Lewis women’s soccer head coach Jimmy Hall can’t recall a game in which his Skyhawks scored as many goals as they did Friday at UC-Colorado Springs.
After falling behind 1-0 in the 10th minute, the Fort Lewis women racked up six goals in the next 80 minutes to win handily on the road 6-2. Jenna Brown and Alica Sanchez each scored twice to lead the way for the Skyhawks.
“We like playing fast and it started raining before the game which kind of played into our hands,” Hall said. “When we got going, the flood gates opened and it was good to see from the sidelines. Our subs were making things happen and we never let up at any point even when we had the big lead. We just wore them out and played fast, solid soccer.”
Less than two minutes after the Mountain Lions took the lead, Brown put in her first of the day. Renee Terrell added one to give the Skyhawks (4-4-1, 3-2-0 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference) a 2-1 lead at halftime which was quickly extended in the second half by Shayla Malecki’s fifth goal of the season that gave FLC a 3-1 lead.
UCCS (1-7-0, 1-3-0 RMAC) cut the deficit to 3-2, but the Skyhawks put any comeback thought to rest in a hurry. Brown added her second goal in between two Sanchez goals, her third and fourth of the year, and FLC cruised the rest of the way.
The Skyhawks will try to keep the offensive outburst going Sunday at 1 p.m. in Gunnison against Western State.
