Teams test their legs in Farmington

BHS, DHS and IHS compete at the Early Bird track and field meet

Ready to break out of winter and onto the track, three local high school track and field teams traveled south for the first meet of the season.

Bayfield, Durango and Ignacio all participated in the Farmington Early Bird meet Saturday. The DHS Demons took third in the boys team scores with 49 points, and the Demons’ girls team took fourth with 68 points.

“We had a great showing for early in the season. We are really proud of the kids,” DHS head coach David McMillan said. “We had a couple of really good performances from some young, upcoming kids.”

Bayfield took fourth in the boys standings with 42 points, and the Wolverines’ girls were fifth with 27.40 points.

“We had some pretty good results. I thought it was a well-run meet, and our kids, for the most part, performed very well,” BHS head coach Sherry Kimball said.

Ignacio’s team didn’t score a point in either the boys or girls competition.

The Durango boys saw senior Trent Andrews win the 800-meter run in a time of 2 minutes, 5 seconds. The Demons took first through third in that event with David Moening taking second (2:07.84) and Garrett Mulkey (2:10.00) third. Joe Crawford (2:11.90) also took sixth in that event for DHS.

“We did really well in those middle-distance events,” McMillan said.

Durango’s Shane Bisogno placed second in the long jump with a leap of 19-feet, 6.5 inches. Justin Marcum was fifth in the triple jump at 39-feet, 5.5 inches, and Austin Daigle (37-09.00) was sixth. Marcum also placed sixth in the pole vault when he soared 11 feet above the bar.

DHS freshman Corbin Lyman impressed McMillan in the 300-meter hurdles with a fourth-place finish. He ran the event in 45.65 seconds.

“That is a good time for a freshman hurdler. He was a top-performing youngster,” McMillan said.

The Demons also took second in the 4x400-meter relay at 3:36.97. Farmington was first in the event at 3:30.18. Durango was third in the 4x100-meter relay with a time of 45.04 seconds.

Aubry Brown was the lone Bayfield Wolverine to take first place for the boys team. He won the discus with a toss of 140-feet, 10 inches. Bayfield’s John Arnold was second in the pole vault with a 12-foot jump. Conner Kennedy leaped into a third-place finish in the high jump at 5-feet, 10 inches.

Trevor Gabbard claimed second for Bayfield in the 1,600-meter run. He finished in 4:37.56, just 0.44 seconds behind first-place Timberlin Henderson of Piedra Vista.

“He had a very good race. He ran in a different heat than (Henderson) so they couldn’t go head-to-head, but he ran great,” Kimball said of Gabbard.

Brady Fields finished fourth for the Wolverines in the 110-meter hurdles in 17.90 seconds. The Wolverines also claimed second in the 1,600-meter sprint medley and fourth in the 4x100-meter relay.

Farmington won the boys meet with 121 points, and Piedra Vista was second with 80 points.

Alli Davis was a bright spot for DHS in the girls meet. She took first in the long jump when she blew away the field with a jump of 17-feet, 1 inch. She also placed second in the high jump (5-02.00) and third in the 400-meter dash (1:03.00).

Shannon Maloney was first in the 400-meter dash for the Demons when she crossed the line in 1:01. She also took first in the 800-meter run in 2:23.75. DHS took first through third in that event with Emily Edwards-Colsman (2:23.75) placing second and Marley Weaver-Gabel (2:44.59) third.

“The middle distances in boys and girls showed up very strong,” McMillan said.

Gabi Razma took first in the triple jump when she flew 34-feet, 5.75 inches for Durango. She also placed fifth in the long jump.

Breann Hawman also stood atop a podium for DHS in the shot put with a first-place throw of 32-feet, 6 inches.

Miranda Gallegos had a solid day for DHS, finishing third in both the 200-meter dash and long jump.

Bayfield’s girls team won the 1,600-meter sprint medley in 4:44.35. The Wolverines also were fourth in the 4x100-meter relay.

Jessica Cusick took second place in the 400-meter dash for BHS in a time of 1:02.82. She finished between Durango’s Maloney and Davis, respectively.

Jessie Roukema had a pair of fourth-place finishes for the BHS girls in the 200-meter dash and high jump. Brittany Hunter also had a fourth-place finish in the pole vault with a jump of 7-feet, 3 inches.

Aztec won the girls meet with 103.20 team points. Piedra Vista was second with 85.20, and Farmington was third with 76.20 points.

Durango’s teams will compete next Saturday at the Pueblo Centennial meet.

Bayfield and Ignacio will head back to Farmington on Saturday for Piedra Vista’s invitational.
