Family of 5 dead in murder-suicide

SINKING SPRING, Pa. – A couple featured in news stories about their difficulties getting medication for a daughter, Willow, who had a heart transplant were found shot to death in their home along with their three children in an apparent murder-suicide, authorities said.

District Attorney John Adams said a handwritten note that “appeared to be a ‘murder-suicide’ note” was found in the family’s Sinking Spring home Saturday afternoon. Police said they found all five dead of gunshot wounds and a handgun near one of the adults, but they didn’t say which one or say who they believe was the shooter.

Police went to the home to check on the welfare of the family after receiving a call from a relative concerned that the woman had not shown up for a lunch date. Mark Short Sr., 40; Megan Short, 33; and their children – 8-year-old Lianna, 5-year-old Mark Jr., and 2-year-old Willow – were found dead in the living room, Adams said.

Two skydivers killed in California

SAN FRANCISCO – One of two skydivers who died plummeting into a Northern California vineyard was 18 and jumping for the first time, and his family was there watching when he hit the ground, the owner of the skydiving center and local authorities said Sunday.

San Joaquin County sheriff’s officials as of Sunday had not publicly identified the new skydiver or the skydiving instructor killed Saturday in Lodi, California, 85 miles east of San Francisco.

Authorities still were trying to reach one of the men’s family for notification, sheriff’s Sgt. Brandon Riley said Sunday. The other man was in his mid-20s, Riley said

Gas prices down 6 cents nationally

CAMARILLO, Calif. – The average price of gasoline in the U.S. has dropped six cents over the past two weeks to $2.16 a gallon for regular grade, industry analyst Trilby Lundberg said Sunday.

A drop in crude oil prices has driven a nine-week decline in costs at the pump, but those prices have strengthened in the past week, Lundberg said. The price has dropped 21 cents since a peak June 3.

The Lundberg Survey found the average price of midgrade unleaded was $2.46 a gallon, and premium was $2.67.

The highest average price for regular gas was $2.70 a gallon in San Diego. The lowest was $1.81 in Jackson, Mississippi.

Syrian rebels break Aleppo siege

BEIRUT – Rebels breached the Syrian government siege on opposition neighborhoods in the city of Aleppo, marking a major military breakthrough that prompted an intense airstrike campaign Sunday, the opposition, residents and pro-government media reported.

In a wide offensive Saturday, an alliance of rebel groups, including the Levant Conquest Front, formerly al-Qaida’s branch in Syria, pushed government forces and allied fighters out of a number of military colleges, a warehouse, a bakery, a parking lot and a section of the highway in the southern Ramouseh district where fighting has raged.
