100 years ago: Among the staff members working at the First National Bank of Durango in January 1917 was president A.P. Camp, vice president J.L. McNeil, cashiers K.A. Gage and G.G. Gondman, auditor H.E. Rainey, and directors Chas Boettcher and Arthur Ayres.

75 years ago: A 15-year-old boy reportedly stricken by amnesia was picked up by a truck driver on the highway near Bayfield. The boy’s possessions included an expensive looking overcoat and suit, 37 cents, a rosary, and a Catholic prayer book. He was educated enough for his age, able to read music and talk about school subjects like mathematics and Latin, though he couldn’t recall how he arrived in Durango, or even Colorado. Based on the ticket stubs he had, Sheriff Bruce Sullivan proposed he was from Detroit and travelled to St. Louis, Denver and Durango by bus.

50 Years Ago: City workers were busy removing ice and snow from the shaded streets, which were proving hazardous to drivers. Although efforts to keep vehicles from sliding off the road seemed justified, the snow in the forecast would inevitably return the layer of ice to city streets before long.

25 years ago: The Fort Lewis College woman’s basketball team was crushed by the University of California at Chico in the Chico Invitational Women’s Basketball tournament. Chico led by a mere two points at halftime, but dominated Fort Lewis in the second half with a final score of 78-51.
