DHS lays claim to 2nd in SWL

Demons win at Fruita Monument for 3 in a row on the road

The road has been kind to the Durango High School boys basketball team lately.

The Demons beat the Fruita Monument Wildcats 61-56 on Friday in Fruita for their third consecutive win away from home.

DHS (9-5, 5-1 Southwestern League) led 59-53 with 59 seconds left in the game and 27-24 at halftime.

Fruita Monument (8-12, 4-3 SWL) took a brief 30-27 lead in the third quarter but couldn’t hold it.

Trent Andrews led DHS with 12 points and nine rebounds, while Dane Mestas scored nine.

“The kids had great effort on both ends of the court,” DHS head coach Alan Batiste said. “We contolled the ball.

“The boys are starting to click.”

The Demons now are in sole possession of second place in the SWL standings behind Grand Junction.

Durango will play Grand Junction Central at 1:30 p.m. Saturday in Grand Junction.
