The rules announced by the Bureau of Land Management (Herald, Dec. 21) giving the green light to powerboats on Lake Nighthorse was long anticipated by those of us attending the meetings and sending in our comments over the past five years, but it is sad nonetheless.
My grandparents lie in a cemetery back East, not too far from a major highway, but the earthen berm surrounding their resting place make the noise of nearby traffic almost a whisper.
For the predecessors of the First Americans in the arid lands of the Southwest, the embrace of blue water must be thought of as a true act of kindness. But the loud sounds of outboard motors and jet skis?
If the Ute and other First Americans decide no noise is to upset the tranquility of an ancestral final resting place, then that will settle the matter. Too many bureaucracies are setting rules; let those for whom the lake was constructed set the rules.
