Demons score a ‘moral victory’

Steamboat Springs Sailors spoil Durango’s perfect spring start

Durango High School’s perfect start to the spring boys lacrosse season was spoiled by a mighty Steamboat Springs team.

The DHS Demons (2-1, 0-1 Mountain League) lost 10-3 to the Steamboat Springs Sailors (3-0, 2-0 ML) on Friday at Canyon View Park in Grand Junction. DHS head coach John Robinette was pleased with his team’s effort against the Sailors considering the Demons were without four starting players.

“We started behind the deck without four starters for several different reasons. Three of them were seniors,” Robinette said. “It was only 2-0 after the first quarter, and that was a good start for us against a traditional powerhouse who has crushed us many times. It was a moral victory.”

Jacob Boyle scored two goals for the Demons, and freshman Jake Beekman added one in his first varsity action.

“Boyle dominated; he won 6-of-7 faceoffs and led the team with nine groundballs and scored two goals on six shots. He played like a true senior leader,” Robinette said. “It was nice seeing (Beekman) in his first game get a goal.”

DHS goalie Walker Brown made 15 saves in the game.

“He made tremendous saves,” Robinette said.

DHS was down 2-0 after one quarter but 7-0 at halftime. Robinette said he rallied the troops at halftime, and they rewarded him by winning the third quarter 1-0.

“We scored and finally got off the schneid and held them scoreless. Winning that quarter was another moral victory,” Robinette said. “We scored two more in the fourth, and they scored three. The way we looked at it, It was a 3-3 second half. That is the closest score we have had against them.”

With a short bench, the Demons, especially the midfielders, had to play a lot of minutes. Robinette said three of the four players will definitely be back for an 11 a.m. game Saturday against Summit at Longs Park in Grand Junction. He said the fourth is day-to-day with an injury.

“Summit is another traditional power here in the Mountain League. With our guys back, I like our chances,” Robinette said.
