Physical, mental disabilities are different

I am writing today to extend my heartfelt and sincere condolences to all of the family and friends of the victims of the mass shooting in Parkland, Florida. My prayers go out, as well, to all of the students and community members. This is such a horrific tragedy that no one should ever witness or endure.

I am a person with physical disabilities, born with cerebral palsy. It is my hope that lawmakers, the media, etc. not automatically confuse those with physical disabilities as people with “mental” disabilities who are capable of causing so much harm to others.

Unfortunately some media generally describes people who have committed these types of crimes as “disabled.” I feel and hope that everyone will become more educated in regard to the use of the word “disabled.”

Again, my prayers are with all involved and encourage all to turn to the Bible in dark times, remembering and reflecting on the Commandments for strength and hope. All life is precious.
