End of Life petition training offered

A training session will be offered for those who would like to volunteer as petition circulators for the “Yes on End of Life Options” initiative. The session will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday at the Durango Public Library.

This initiative would make it possible for individuals who are suffering an incurable illness and who have less than six months to live to ask their physicians for medication that would end their lives.

Contact Juanita Ainsley at juanita.ainsley@aol.com if you would like to attend this session. You can also email PatArlonLyon@gmail.com to sign the petition or request more information about the initiative.

May proves beneficial to regional snowpack

May’s weather could not have suited Colorado’s water supply better. A steady pattern of cool, wet weather systematically hit Colorado, providing moisture to the watersheds that needed it most.

The combined San Miguel, Dolores, Animas and San Juan basins fared the best this month, receiving 154 percent of normal precipitation, followed by the Rio Grande at 144 percent. Overall snowpack in the state was 201 percent of normal as of June 1.

As of last Friday, the Tower SNOTEL measurement site near Steamboat Springs still had more than 6 feet of snow depth remaining, down from nearly 10 feet in mid-May. Although more sparsely distributed, snowpack in the southern mountains of Colorado, such as in the San Juan Mountains above 11,000 feet, is greater than normal for this time of year.

Business groups issue critique of initiatives

The Durango Chamber of Commerce, Durango Area Association of Realtors, Home Builders Association of Southwest Colorado and La Plata Energy Council have collaborated and written an informative “white paper” outlining the issues and initiatives facing the local community.

The white paper is a group effort to help educate organizations, businesses, residents and the general public. It also aims to prepare voters for 2016 elections and initiatives.

It is intended to be a resource to help residents form their own opinions and make the best choices for their families, businesses and community.

The document will be accessible through the chamber website, www.durangobusiness.org.
