Maria’s Bookshop, 960 Main Ave., will be celebrating 30 years of independent book-selling all week with deals, specials and a party.

Thirtieth anniversary commemorative mugs will be given all week with a $30 purchase.
Past and current employees will have their artistic work displayed in the store.

Grant applications for DFA available now
Applications for Durango Friends of the Arts’ grants are available now at Karyn Gabaldon Fine Arts, 680 Main Ave.
Completed applications must be returned no later than Oct. 15.

Unitarian recital series to kick off
The Recital Series at the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Durango will kick off its eighth season Friday with a sister duo featuring Kathryn Shaffer and Kristen Chen.
Shaffer will play the flute, and Chen will play the piano. The women will perform music from the 19th and 20th centuries, and each performer will present solo pieces.
The show will take place at 7 p.m. at the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship, 419 San Juan Drive. The series will continue through May. Tickets are $15 for adults and $7 for children. Season subscriptions are also available. Call 385-8668 for more information.
ACT to host special Oktoberfest concerts
Oktoberfest Durango, Durango Massive and the Animas City Theatre have partnered to bring three nights of live music to the Animas City Theatre, 128 E. College Drive.
The music will begin at 9 p.m. Thursday with Heavy Metal Night featuring Morbid Justice, Skull Theory, Ethnic De Generation, Born of Winter and Fail the Earth.
Friday’s lineup will bring funk acts Eufórquestra with Atomga, starting at 9:45 p.m. And bluegrass band Mountain Standard Time will perform at 9:15 p.m. on Saturday.
