100 years ago: “For probably the first time in the history of the county every teacher holding a certificate is employed. In order to fill the vacancy on Red Mesa it was necessary for the superintendent to declare an emergency existed, and grant a temporary certificate.”
75 years ago: “The Durango naval recruiting station will be closed for the winter beginning Nov. 13. There was no reason given for this action which has had no precedent, the Durango station previously having been kept open all year round.”
50 years ago: “Bids will be opened for razing of two buildings in Rio Grande-land along the D&RGW tracks south of Sixth Street. Structures to be razed are in back of the early-day properties fronting on the west side of Main Avenue between Fifth and Sixth streets. It is the first step in clearing the area of unsightly structures, and is in accord with the master plan for development of the area.”
25 years ago: “For the first time in more than a year, La Plata Community Hospital has shown a profit. Its September end-balance showed $1,306 in the black. The profit might be short-lived, however, as officials predict that October will not be as good a month. Following at least 10 months of losses that added up to more than $90,000 during some months, the hospital showed a slight gain in September because of an improvement in four main service areas.”
